VROOOM! WHAAT?! WHERE!! The British go go vrOoOoMm with their Hot Red Bus in Alhambra, CA. What yummy foods lie within this fun-ly decorated restaurant are some of the best fish and chips in the 626 region! These hand-cut filets are fresh and clean and to die for! Not to mention, doesn’t smell fishy either! I don’t know what kind of batter they use, but it does its job keeping the moisture of the fishes inside! Just imagine breaking into your first fish and the hot steam escaping from the moist, hot flakes. It makes me drool.
This place looks so fun! It’s British and Indian themed but I can’t tell! All over the walls are funny, pirate-sounding catch phrases. It was so fun looking around the place while waiting for your food. I almost felt like I was in a museum haha.
australian root beer “bundaberg” and full sail amber beer – what!! I love root beer and it’s the only soda I would drink. Soda always tastes better coming from a glass bottle and the Australians really know how to add in the extra root-y kick!
from left to right – pollock, cod, and swai fishies
pollock [wild caught alaskan sustainable] cod loin [wild caught alaskan sustainable] swai [sustainably raised]
Kind of looks like an octopus doesn’t it? Let’s talk about each fish and their differences! I’ll start with my least favorite although they are all DELICIOUS!
COD is very good. It’s the short one in the middle. Not as flaky as the other two but more firm.
POLLOCK is more flaky and tender and moist. When you break it open, (I don’t suggest biting into it the first time; it’s way too hot and you’ll burn your mouth for sure. Break it open and allow some steam out) you can see the flakes break apart in short, fat flakes. Not to mention, this fish holds onto the batter well so you’ll get bits of batter hugging onto the flakes. This adds that crunch when you chew on it.
SWAI is my favorite fish!! Whether it is fried or baked or grilled, this fish is already super tender. You can just see the tenderness of the longer, slim flakes that break apart. The glistening of the flakes that you see just automatically tells you how moist and flaky and tender it is! Really, really soft and tender.
I broke all of them in half first to let them cool down a bit 😀
served with twice fried Kennebec chips “fries,” a dollop of house tartare sauce, sweet pickled onion and a wedge of lemon. yummm.
The fries are good! In between of soft and skinny fries versus the big, crunchy steak fries.
Warning: There is a TINY wait, but that’s only because they don’t start frying until you order! Now you know it’s super freshly fried! Come eat here if you want a semi-healthy cheat meal!
