Who is a carnivore and admits it? Most of us are!! As an American, we love eating meat. It’s in our flesh and blood. But today, I’m not gonna talk about ordinary meat, not even steak. I’m talking about weird meat.. like organs 😀 😀 For those of you who know me, or are a true Asian to the blood and bone, we like to eat weird stuff!! In LA, there is a restaurant called Animal that serves all that weird stuff in exquisite form!! And yay for seeing folks of all color eating here! 🙂 From my personal experiences, my non-Asian friends are always scared of the food we cook and eat. Hell, I even had some roommates that were skeptical of trying pho their first time because they thought we put “weird” meat in it!
But let’s talk about the animals that are served here.. 🙂 But to start off, we had to get some carbonated drinks knowing that we’re going to be gobbling down some delicious meat.
Mexican coke – A different take from American coke and I like it! The difference between Mexican coke and american coke is that american coke is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup and Mexican coke is sweetened with cane sugar. So in a sense, Mexican coke is healthier and tastes sweeter on a lighter level!
lemon, lime & bitters – Interesting carbonated drink that I just had to try 🙂 Kind of tastes like Sprite
chicken liver toast – mmMmm let’s start with the first animal we are eating here and in what form?! Pate form! Just like the French people.. and the Vietnamese people.. But originally it’s French. Delicious, warm, crispy toast with a smooth, savory serving of chicken liver pate spread on top. What’s that black stuff? Caviar, my friend and a lot of it!! This place is famous for their chicken liver toasts and it took all my willpower to not order a bunch because I had to save room for the rest..
japanese uni, heirloom cucumbers, za’atar, fried cheese, hb egg – My favorite dish to eat from this whole course! It was just so refreshing and crunchy!! Cool and warm at the same time! And those tofu looking things? Fried cheese, can you believe?!
marrow bone, chimichurri, caramelized onions – I absolutely love bone marrow! How can anyone not? If you’ve never tried, it’s like eating super fatty, soft fat.. Haha 😀
yellowtail collar, jerk spices, watermelon radish, citrus, palm sugar – The yellowtail collar was cooked to have a crispy skin covered! Fish was super flavorful and salty, which contrasted perfectly when you include the fruity pieces with each bite!
veal brains, vadouvan, apricot puree, carrot – It doesn’t look like brains doesn’t it? I thought it looked like a tiny chicken when I first saw it. But nope, it’s brains! Who loves veal? Especially baby veal? Their meat is just so tender and juicy… so soft and chewy… Now imagine their brains.. even more tender… I am an animal huh? I can’t help it; I love weird stuff!
foie gras, biscuit, maple sausage gravy – For the first time, a dessert threw me off guard! It looks savory, but it’s surprisingly a sweet dish! I think it was the maple that made it sweet!
Now if you guys haven’t tried Animal yet, I highly suggest you try! Especially if it’ll be your first time eating animal parts other than just their basic meat parts.. We’re talking organs here! This place is pretty safe and cooked in fine dining style so it’ll be less scary for y’all! I will come back here to try their different seasonable dishes year round! 🙂
