Good morning and happy 4th of July!! Hope everyone has fun and stays safe tonight! (: And eat yummy BBQs! Yesterday, I went to check out Smorgasburg. Smorgasburg has been a while at other locations and is a market that features food, drink, vintage crafts, and designs! It reached downtown LA during the past month of June 2016 and happens every Sunday from 10am-6pm. Being the foodie that I am, I went to check out some of the treats that these food vendors would have! It is similar to 626 night market, but is “day” market instead. There is a parking structure for the event that’s free for the first 2 hours! Yay for easy parking!! Since this location is pretty new, there were still open space, but I can imagine that it’ll fill up as the weeks go by and more people know about this market!
The first food vendor I checked out was simple and just called Grilled Cheese. They make grilled cheese sandwiches on the spot after you order and all sandwiches come with a dip of tomato basil soup.
johnny apple cheese aka johnny pastrami (sourdough, white cheddar, apple mustard, chutney + pastrami, green apple) This tasted like a bacon and mozarella cheese sandwich! The thinly, sliced green apples actually felt refreshing to eat. The sandwiches were toasted just perfectly and to my surprise, this wasn’t oil nor greasy to eat! Kind of pricey though.. $5 for half a grilled cheese sandwich.
the mole melt – squaw + pepperjack, chicharron, chocolate mole mayo + chorizo, black beans, tapatia, marinated red onions + cilantro. This sandwich looks ugly, but actually tasted pretty good too! The texture of everything blended in with the chorizo so all I could taste and feel in my mouth was chorizo. I feel like all the other ingredients were lost to the chorizo. 🙁
Have you guys ever heard tried Little Spoon before? I haven’t, but I thought the name was cute. They serve frozen yogurt in a few flavors. I tried the caramel latte (decadent coffee pudding filled with ribbons of caramel and handmade biscotti). Let me tell you this: the frozen yogurt was literally frozen. You guys have tried frozen yogurt aka froyo at other places before right? They were light, icy, and soft? But these are rock hard and I had a hard time digging my spoon and making a dent! I almost wanted to leave it in the sun a bit so that it’ll soften. Nevertheless, it tasted good and sweet, but nothing too special here.
BUT..
This was something special that I have never heard of nor seen before! And I would say I enjoyed this a lot. Here we have Raindrop Cake in two flavors: black sugar cane and green tea matcha. This dessert was created by Darren Wong in Japan, who was inspired by the traditional Mizu Shingen mochi. It looks like delicate raindrop in HUGE form. Here, I got the combination of both flavors on each side. The black sugar cane was sweet and reminded me of grass jelly! The green tea matcha was a slightly thicker and creamier texture and also lightly sweetened. I enjoyed both flavors!! I would actually come back to this market with the sole purpose of bringing friends to come try this delicate dessert! Plus, it was so fun to wiggle it around! 😀
