I’ve always thought you could only eat udon in one way: hot and in noodle shoyu broth. But Marugame Monzo showed me a new way of eating udon: in creamy and delicious sauces. It is almost like eating pasta but the Japanese way! Not only that, but the chefs hand make their udon noodles right in front of your eyes! These are the same noodles you’ll order and eat! It is truly an entertainment to watch and a feast for your stomach! So if you sit at the bar, you can enjoy your meal while watching the chefs hand pull the udon! All of the udon noodles here are very soft and velvety.
soft boiled egg tempura – The egg yolk was perfectly runny and hot when you break it! Eat it by itself? You could! It’ll taste good but even better if you top it on your own udon order.
champion udon – hot udon with champion soup, mixed vegetables, and seafood. Ever had one of those days where you want something brothy and comforting? This is the best hot udon in the restaurant! Abundant in flavors and seafood. I personally wish the scallops and were bigger though. The small squid pieces are a delight to find and eat!
mentai squid butter – seasoned cod roe butter sauce with squid and onions. This is also another hot udon, but the broth is a bit heavier and packed with more savory flavors than the traditional udon broth. There is squid and I love the little cod roe fish eggs topped on top! So tiny and crunchy! It’s fun to drink the broth when the eggs are everywhere! The seaweed adds a delicate saltiness too.
miso carbonara – creamy white sauce based udon with bacon, hint of miso flavor. Have you ever had carbonara pasta? This is almost like it! It’s the Japanese version of the Italian carbonara pasta actually. The bacon pieces are big, thick and juicy. The sauce is extremely creamy and thick with a hint of Japanese.
sea urchin cream udon – creamy uni cream sauce udon topped with ikura (salmon egg). This is the ultimate udon that everyone raves and everyone talks about when coming to this place! Sometimes you come in a group and everyone orders this same order all around. Fresh and delicious flavors of the sea and ocean melt in your mouth from the uni. The sauce is extremely, extremely creamy and has the mild uni flavor. The sauce also has bits of uni pieces throughout! This dish is just packed in uni flavors! Delicious! Delicious! Best sea urchin cream sauce I have ever eaten! Towards the end it was hard to finish because of the thick creaminess but at the same time I didn’t want to stop eating it because it is just that good!
There are so many more hot and cold udon (I have not tried any cold dishes yet) and this place will always be one that I’ll come back to! If you come eat here, always order the tempura soft boiled egg! It adds a whole new element to your udon and I promise you won’t regret it!
