Good morning guys! Right now it’s about 10am Roman time! Yesterday was a pack filled day of touristy things and food! I can’t wait to share what I’ve eaten so let’s get started π Now the first half of the day was kind of a lost, exploring kind of day because we had no data to look up the best local places to eat so it was based off of us randomly picking whatever we found on the streets! Now let me tell you restaurants in Italy is much different from America. Most of them are outdoor restaurants on sidewalks or in small cobblestone alley ways! Some are even decorated with potted plants and flowers. There’s even amateur music players if you’re lucky enough!
First place we stopped at was called La Vittoria Ristorante Pizzeria and we ordered the generic margarita pizza.
Pizza in Rome is different from the pizza we were used to. Their pizza is always super thin crusted and it’s almost like flatbread dough with toppings thinly spreader on top! Here we have the thin layer tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. Kind of mild in flavor but you grow to like it as you eat it.
I don’t remember where we are at next but it was in one of the little alleyways and cutely decorated with plants and bushes! I think this place was a tourist trap π
lasagna with red chicory, Scamorza, and Porcini. It’s funny how they warn you ahead of time that this was frozen food or only the mushrooms were? We couldn’t tell but this lasagna was baked in a HUGE pan and pieces were served as they were ordered. This was super cheesy and salty so I didn’t really like it π
But for dinner we are at a popular local place! Hurray for finally getting data! This place is called Ai Tre Scalini. Lots of locals come and there were a lot of people waiting outside at dinner time. For the first time, our waiter was friendly too!
Two glasses of wine to start out the evening ;)!
beef carpaccio – special of the day. Compared to America, their slices were thick. I enjoyed this raw plate very much. Served with an assortment of greens and olives.
lasagna al ragu – This lasagna is what they’re known for and I saw so many locals order it. It is super short and consists of only a thin layer of meats and cheeses but it was so good! Savory but not too salty, and the meat nor cheese wasn’t overpowering. My favorite dish of the day!
polpette al sugo – beef meatballs in tomato sauce. This was good too! Big beef balls in classic tomato sauce.
Now what about gelato?! There were so many gelato stands and cafes everywhere we walked!! It’s like boba in SoCal for them! And may I mention it was super hot and kind of humid so I can understand the love and thirst for fresh and cold gelato!
La Gelaterie was a gelato stand near the Colosseum that serves gelato with waffle cookies!
pistachio and cafe flavors. The coffee flavor was so good and the pistachio had a rich flavor!
But the BEST gelato place is called Giolitti. This place constantly packed with lines of people moving alone to pay and get served.
Prickly pear and watermelon (left) and hazelnut and caramelized fig (right). Also topped with their whip cream! Interesting right? It was soft and creamy and light. My favorite flavor was the watermelon! It had dark chocolate chips in it and tasted so good that we kept going back to buy more scoops! When in Italy, eat a lot of gelato right? π
Sadly, people in Rome weren’t generally nice to us. You can tell they don’t like tourists and most of the waiters in restaurants don’t really focus on quality service π But that’s an experience of Rome for us. And we made it!
And that concludes a day in Rome for me! Thanks for reading! Stay tuned π
