Each city in Italy is significantly different in history, art and culture. Aside from being known for its typical Italian pizza, pasta and gelato, Florence is especially known for its steak! I never would have guessed! Florentine steak.
Where did florentine T-bone steak come from? It all started with Trattoria Za Za, born in the San Lorenzo Market. Bonfires celebrating Saint Lawrence (Saint to the famous Medici family) would occur every August 10. When the bonfires started to die down, the glowing charcoal would be used to roast veal and meats. Chianina meat was mostly used and it was always weight at least 1kg. In fact, this restaurant only allow you to order by 1kg! 1-2 fingers thick and cut from the rib-eye, this steak was only seasoned with salt and pepper and cooked for 4 minutes on each side on an iron grill. Delicious and that was all that was needed!
Trattoria Za Za is a glorified steak restaurant in Florence of Italy that is always filled with locals craving meat and tourists wanting to get a taste. The insides of the restaurant is remarkable beautiful. No words can describe the intricate beauty that represents Florentine art.
Bread is lightly seasoned. No need for olive oil and vinegar! And you know how in America, we drink Italian cream soda? There is no such thing here! The Italians didn’t know what we were talking about. Instead, they have True Italian soft drinks called Festivo di Portofino (cedar/apple/ginger) and Mandarinata Niasca di Portofino (Niasca Portofino tangerine drink)
Siena Pici pasta Za Za style (with sausage and cream sauce) This was only half size because we knew we wouldn’t finish!! Why?! Because of the steak we were about to eat!! But this pasta tasted amazingly delicious! Way better than the bolognese pasta I’m used to and not smelly!
Famous Florentine grilled Tenderloin beefsteak by the kilo. We ordered 1kg. Just look at how huge it is!! The side closest to you is the tender like side and may I say it was the best steak I have ever eaten in regards to taste, texture and just everything! Medium-rare and it literally melts in your mouth! It was just so soft and smooth! Can you imagine meat like that?! I fell in love!!!!
So if you ever get a chance to visit the Florentine part of Italy, you must try their steak! And I highly recommend from Trattoria Za Za itself! It is the epitome of all Florentine steaks. 🙂 Ciao!
