Each city in Italy is especially known for a particular dish. While Florence has superior steak, Venice has delicious squid ink pasta! Maybe it’s because Venice is actually composed of many, many islands on water!! Approximately 117 islands that are connected by 409 small bridges!! No cars and bikers are allowed because of the many, many bridges and canals that interlock these small buildings on islands. Venice is completely afloat!! 😱 Everyone walks!
Gondolas are popular to ride among the canals in the water. Back then, it was romantic to have your private gondola ride with your “driver” singing to you, but now it is a busy, busy business that flourishes with many touristy customers! It is all about money! But back to the food now yes? 🙂
Trattoria Canonica is a restaurant just outside of the official glass-making showroom in Venice (glass is made in Murano (also known as the Glass Making Island) and brought over to Venice to sell). They have delicious pasta here (although on the steeper side of prices).
spaghetti “mamma mia” – spaghetti avec boulettes de veau – spaghetti meat balls. Remember the classic spaghetti and meatballs from your childhood days? I loved those and I loved this dish even more! The tomato sauce was cooked perfectly (I hate spaghetti sauce that ends up being too sour from the tomatoes). Meatballs were seasoned well and flavorful just delicious, delicious spaghetti to make a child or adult happy.
vermicelli al nero di seppia – vermicelli with black squid ink sauce. Now here is what we came to eat!! Maybe they get a lot of squid in their waters? Let me tell you, the squid is so soft, tender and juicy… The squid ink is so good and so real! The sauce is actually there! I’m so used to having only black-colored pasta, but there was squid ink sauce too! It was good and savory! But be careful, your mouth easily turns black (lips, tongue, and teeth) from the squid ink 😉
Venice is a completely dense city in which you can easily get lost in its many zig-zag alleyways! A complete maze with so many twists and turns of all sizes and widths. According to history, they made the alleyways so confusing so that stranglers and burglars would get lost within the city and can’t get out. Only the locals know it’s roads. Even the printed map can’t label each narrow street because there is just too many and there is no room! So finding restaurants and stores is especially hard because you get lost so, so easily! Trying to find a place was particularly hard!
My warning to you that goes for all touristy places: try not to get stuck eating at a touristy place! I actually did with this one on account for time, but it was still very good nevertheless! Just poor service and high prices, but the food was still bomb.
