I am extra excited about this blog because this entry is about a cute, little German bakery that is in the middle of literally.. NOWHERE in Utah. During my past weekend in Utah to visit Zion National Park, I accidentally stumbled upon a legit German bakery in a tiny city called Orderville, UT. By legit, I mean legit.. like own and run by a German family. This German bakery is called Forscher German Bakery & Cafe. This place is tucked inside an isolated building with no neighbors in a dusty, empty city. The dirt roads lead to scattered and scarce restaurants, businesses and homes. In fact, I didn’t even notice this place on the road (it looked like just another dusty building to me on the outside) until I was complaining about a slow truck driver in front of us who turned into this parking lot.
We noticed that it was a German bakery. “Hey, a German bakery in the middle of nowhere. Do you think it might be good?” “Who knows? Let’s just give it a try!” And so we followed the slow truck driver into the parking lot, parked and stepped inside. The bakery was very clean kept and smelled of delicious bread. There were shelves and counters filled with different types of bread, different loaves of bread and even pastries! All breads were huge and came in different colors, shapes and sizes. From the looks of it, this place looked promising of bread (AND I LOVE BREAD).
“I’ve never been to Germany before! This must be like what a German breakfast could be like! I’m going to order the German breakfast.”
DEUTSCHES FRUESTUECK (German Breakfast) – a variety plate with Black Forest ham, prosciutto, gouda and truffle cheddar cheese and a pickle. Served with butter and two German rolls.
What were the German rolls? Thanks to their lovely brochure provided, the two BROETCHEN/bread rolls were the:
- XXL Brinkchen 80g / XXL Brinkchen 2.8oz – The Forscher bread roll is a German classic roll with a delicate aromatic crumb and a cracky splintering crust. It is made out of 100% wheat flour with wheat-based sponge pre-dough. This was the white, sour dough-looking bread to the far right.
- Mohnbroetchen 70g / Poppy Seed 2.5oz – This is a crispy roll with a model star-shaped top decorated with poppy seeds. It is made out of 100% wheat flour with wheat-based sponge pre-dough. This was the bagel-shaped bread to the left with a star design!
Both breads were delicious: smelled and tasted fresh. It had a crispy crunch when you first bite into it and the chewy, soft dough on the inside. They were already pre-sliced in half so we made our “German” breakfast sandwiches with the variety of meats and cheeses provided.
I also ordered a European home style sandwich. This was the LIVERWURST AND APPLE SPREAD sandwich, which consisted of authentic liverwurst and authentic sweet and sour apple spread served on a multi-seed roll. I wanted to order only special German items from the menu and this was the second menu item that caught my eye. I love liver and liver paste! This was the first time I ate liver paste that was complemented with a something sweet. The intensely strong flavor from the liverwurst was perfectly balanced with the sweetness of the apple spread. The whole sandwich was so crunchy, chewy, sweet and savory at the same time.
They were generous with the spread serving. The potato salad and the pickle were good additions to the main breakfasts.
It was a very simple German breakfast, but it was a bakery I was extremely pleased to have discovered. I never would have expected delicious baked German bread in Utah. Never would have imagined! Surprises are sweet!
If this was just a hint of what German food is like, I definitely want to visit Germany someday and eat more delicious food! 🙂
[[Attached below is a copy of their brochure. This is probably the only brochure I have found interesting to read and liked. It was very educational and informative of the different types of German breads and pastries. Enjoy!]]
