Yesterday morning, we naturally woke up again super early to check out of our capsule to head to Hakone, the city of natural hot springs and Mt. Fuji. On our way out, we stopped by a Lawson store for some coffee and breakfast.
We got two onigiri (salmon & sesame and Berkshire pork), two minced tuna handrolls and two lattes (matcha green tea latte and Hochija latte). Everything is so good and cheap! In actually loving the onigiri and handrolls right now if you guys haven’t noticed yet haha.
The Hochija tea latte came with this little bag to throw the tea bag in prior to the trash can. I thought this was very interesting and have been meaning to ask someone who spoke English why this is so! Must be how their organizational trash system works.
After taking a metro train to the main JR station, it was time to explore our first subway station food!
First stop: an onigiri haven! There was too many to choose from!
We got a grilled onigiri called the spicy cod roe, leaf mustard and mayo grilled onigiri for 220yen. It was yummy with lots of filling and the chewy grilled rice added to the texture.
This was soooo yummy. It doesn’t look like much but it was so good.
Next stop: let’s eat ramen at the subway station! I really like this concept of paying first in a vending machine. This is so brilliant! Definitely replaces the need for a cashier.
I love that they served us cold tea for free.
Our appetizer of spicy minced cod roe on rice.
You mix it up completely before eating it!
Yummy pork ramen! Not sure what kind of broth but it was definitely not shoyu nor tonkotsu. Delicious, delicious. I think it’s safe to eat anywhere in Japan. The food is good everywhere!
Coat hangers everywhere!
Time for some coffee because the boyfriend always insists!
This looks so cool?! We went to Saza Coffee.
This is how they brew their cold brew coffee.
Iced cold brew coffee and iced Shogun caffe latte.
Now next I wanted dessert and the cool thing about the subway station is that it’s a filled with many dessert options!
Its in am egg cart! That’s so cute! I imagine this dessert place to use many eggs for their other desserts and they thought of a way to reuse material instead of just throwing it away.
Whoa! We got these two eggs! Don’t know what they’re called because it’s all in Japanese but I imagine a cream flan custard with coffee filling at the bottom and a mocha cream custard.
The texture was very smooth and creamy with a moldy sweet taste. They used real egg shells! They also gave us small spoons to accommodate the small opening of the dessert.
After we landed from the train station into Hakone, we still had an hour until check-in (we tried to see Mt. Fuji first but it was too cloudy). Hakone is a small, small city by the base of the mountain and it had one Main Street called Tokaido that runs along with the Hayakawa River.
And now we are hungry so let’s go eat and kill some time! We are at a sit down restaurant where you take off your shoes and sit on the floor. Super comfortable! I like how I can stretch out my legs.
Boyfriend wanted soupy soba noodles with shrimp tempura.
Cookie wanted dry soba noodles with shrimp tempura. Both noodles are delicious and the different broth options was nice. Let’s eat and share them both ways!
Delicious! I love dipping this in chilled dipping sauce. Soba noodles are buckwheat flour noodles that are thin in contrast to the fat udon noodles. It’s either serviced in broth or a chilled dipping sauce.
Mixed matcha and vanilla ice cream! This was sooooo good! The texture of the ice cream was more icy and light while the sugar cone was different.. I can’t explain how but it was so good in such a different way from American cones.
Here’s our ryokan for the rest of the evening called Fukuzumiro.
Our personal tea set with green tea and oolong tea leaves. They gave us a big pot of boiling water on the side too.
They served us some hot green tea with red bean mochi desserts.
It was sooooo soft and chewy.
So we did something different for dinner this time. Instead of going out to eat (it’s a very touristy city and everything here is sooo expensive compared to Tokyo) and instead of eating at the dinner they offered us, we decided to opt to Lawson to buy food and snacks and stay in! We made our own meal time! This was what we wanted to do at least once was to buy all of their snacks and little take out meals and try it. They all look and are so good and they are all so pretty!!!!!! All of this food was less than 2000yen.
Boyfriend wanted a Japanese beer and whiskey. The whiskey was sooo strong.
I saw this boba milk tea at the Lawson store and just HAD to try it! The milk tea was good. The boba wasn’t really boba. It was just small jelly balls. No wonder it can stay good in liquid for a long time! Haha.
