Today is our last full day in Beijing before going back home tomorrow. At this point of travel, I actually am homesick for my own toilet and shower and bed. I can’t wait to go home!!!!
My mom and I woke up super early again and was already hungry. Back to our prime breakfast spot in Western Mahua because not only is it good, but it’s the only one besides McDonalds that’s open this early. We went out at about 7am this time.
We ordered our usual favorites. Each person gets her own bowl of intestines soup. My mom gets her tofu and salty bean sauce. I get my hot unsweetened soy bean milk that I now realized they also provide sugar to add!! YAY!! These are made fresh and big are they good. And super cheap too! The soybean drink was only 3 yen. How can you beat those prices in America? That’s less than 50 cents USD.
Here is another close up because it looks so yummy. My favorite meats are the dark purple-brown smoother looking pieces. They’re so tender and juicy. Slightly gamey, but I like the texture of that.
On the way up Dongsi street the last time, we got a small bao for me 5 yen. It had a meat pattie inside that tasted pretty good but kind of stinky. The bun itself was very soft. I like Vietnamese buns more.
They gave it to me in a small plastic bag. It was really hot!
Here a picture after I bit it. I ate and walked at the same time while my mom guided me through the human traffic.
Then we stopped by my favorite bakery again and I bought 8 fresh and hot dan tats for 6 yen each. I ate 3 right away on the spot.
It was hot. It was fresh. It was sweet. Creamy. Flaky.
Look at that generous egg tart. Ugh. So beautiful. So tasty. I am in love with it!!!! This totally beats dan tats in 626. Maybe not in SF Chinatown though. Haha.
Then after walking apm mall one last time to work up an appetite, we went to a restaurant that my mom and I have been passing by a lot to eat Peking duck one last time.
So my mom and I had a taste of expensive Peking duck. Now we want to try cheap Peking duck to compare. This restaurant was so busy! So many locals were in here buying noodles and all sorts of dishes.
So maybe it’s a china thing that you use thin rice papers to wrap your duck in. It’s not like in America where they’re actual buns. Interesting… this whole thing was just 48 yen btw. Much cheaper.
I think I like cheap Peking duck more. The meat is fattier and more juicy. More tender. More flavor. The skin is more thin.
After sharing the Peking duck, we went to get boba one last time too! I got jasmine green milk tea with mini boba and my mom got milk tea with grass jelly.
UPDATE FROM DINNER: This was the best meal ever in Beijing! And the cheapest too.. let me tell you a short story…
So once upon a time, a mother and daughter explored the streets of Beijing near their hotel. One of the streets had small vendor windows selling food. The mother is nosy and noticed that one of the windows was a man selling roasted duck by the gram. A lot of locals line up to buy either half a duck or a whole duck. The man then weighs it and chops it up into pieces puts them on a square piece of foil and wraps it up to them. I think this is where locals buy cheap yet good food. This is not a touristy spot at all. AND I LOVE IT.
Is the mother and daughter walked by it again on the way to Chinese hot pot just now for dinner. We noticed the man chopping more Peking duck. We scoot over to watch out of curiosity. We see the same deliciousness and can’t resist. Let’s eat it!!!
Luckily, a kind Chinese girl ahead of us knew English and helped us order. Even if we didn’t have her, I think my mom and I would have managed just fine!
For half a Peking duck, we paid 19.6 yen. That’s roughly $3 USD! WHAAAAAT! The cheapest and definitely most worth food buy this entire trip!!
My mom and I were beyond thrilled! We could not have been more happier!
Where to eat this now hmm? We decided to go to our favorite grocery food court to buy a dish of theirs to eat both in the food court tables!
This is beef chunks, potatoes, carrots, green and red bell peppers, plenty of delicious sauce on a bed of chewy rice for 39 yen. Came with a coke. More pricey than the duck but that’s okay! Still cheap compared to US and we were too happy to let anything dampen it!
What a successful last dinner in Beijing. 🙂
