Our actual first day in Tulum was supposed to be our second for one of my best friends’ bachelorette party. On Wednesday morning, we headed to LAX for our 745am flight to head to Cancun. However, when we were at the check in desk, the agent was unable to process our boarding tickets because there were duplicated return flights booked for all of us that Expedia did. After being on the phone with the Expedia supervisor for 7+ hours, we finally got a flight to depart at midnight and land the next day at 10am. That’s the short version of the story. I don’t even want to ever repeat the long version because it was too much and too frustrating.
To sum up Wednesday, we left LAX at 2ish, got a full body Chinese massage in San Gabriel, tried to nap, are at Big Catch (see fb page for food pictures), and more food for free at PF Chang’s at Tom Bradley Terminal (thanks to priority pass) and boarded the plane at midnight.
But to Thursday, our actual first day in Tulum!!! Our Airbnb provided a shuttle service to pick us up from the airport and directly to our Airbnb, which was beautiful! It was like a personal grandiose resort for our special bachelorette Tracey, secluded in the middle of nowhere.
Our place was sooo nice! Almost all of the rooms had private, open balconies with chairs, end tables, swings, etc. Two of the restrooms were open showers with plants!!! It was so open and breezy to shower in the open. It felt so freeee!!!!
We even had a decent pool that was cleaned by a private gardener who did it just as we arrived. We had big body cushion pillows at the bedside.. The pictures will tell it all!
— and thanks to Tiff, Tracey’s cousin, for the cute bachelorette set-up and Vivian for the cute decor! —
After a whole afternoon of lounging, swimming and drinking, we used tomato, a version of UBEReats in Mexico, to order delivery for us from a local Mexican restaurant.
We ordered from Safari Comedor Zama.
Yuca truffle fries. Sweet potato fries sprayed with truffle oil and smoky mayonnaise on the side. I am so sorry I did not take a picture of this!!!!! I don’t know how I missed it!!! But it was one of my favorite things to eat from this whole mix. It didn’t look that pretty but it tasted amazing. It was basically thick sweet potato fries with a creamy spicy mayonnaise sauce to dip with. The fries smelled like truffle and were chewy.
Champinones Sope Tik. Thick tortilla with scatik Chile, roasted zetas, sikil pak pumpkin seeds mole. This was soooo good! Thanks to another girl name Alicia, I never would have thought of ordering this if it weren’t for her. The pumpkin seeds mole was very good. This entire thing was very rich, dense and heavy. It filled me up fast! It reminded me of a pupusa.
Quesadilla. Handmade tortilla with cheese and avocado. This quesadilla was just okay. It could use more cheese and bigger in size. Other than that, I do just love anything with avocado.
Pork Pastor. Fired, slow cooked pork with pineapple and coriander. These tacos were pretty filling! The meat weas in big chunks. I love local tacos because the sizes of the tortilla are small, but the filling is definitely there. The pineapple was very refreshing and added a contrast of tang to the flavor profile. Reminded me of pineapple pizza!
Crispy fish. Corn tortilla, beer battered tempura fish, with passion fruit mayonnaise and cabbage. I really like this fish taco!!! You can taste the slight flavor of passion fruit in the mayonnaise. The fish was perfectly crispy and well seasoned on the outside while flaky and moist in the inside.
More tacos.
And fishy tacos. Yum yummmmm
We also had chips and salsa. You can’t go wrong with the traditional thick and freshly fried tortilla chips.
And surprisingly, that was the only thing I ate today from Tulum. Other than that, I did chow down a Vietnamese sandwich from home.
Some of us feel pretty tired and beat up from the LAX wait and mix-up yesterday and didn’t get much sleep both nights in a row. I don’t ever think flying red eye is a good idea anymore. I almost can never get good sleep on the plane so I end up being delirious. I can’t wait to be full refreshed tomorrow after a good night’s sleep on an actual bed!
