Good morning to day 2 of Hawaii!! I am extra excited today because we are hiking today!! We are going to do the Wiliwilinui Ridge hiking trail that is approximately 5 miles in and out and the end result view is overlooking all of Oahu. The trail composes of some ropes to help navigate up and down the muddy and steep trail too!
But first off, let’s fuel ourselves with some Hawaiian Kona coffee from Kona Coffee Purveyors – b. Patisserie.
I ordered the hot latte with Kona coffee beans. It was really strong and definitely over energized me for the hike!
Then, for a small bite of breakfast and to take with us to the trail to munch on, we went to Musubi Cafe Iyasume, where it is a small mom and pop shop that makes the best spam musubis!
There was a long line but it went pretty fast. They make everything fresh to order and wrap each individual musubi very tight. There was also special types of canned musubis, which I almost bought but decided to check the local grocery stores first.
For the spam musubis, I got three types:
Egg spam musubi, Avocado bacon egg spam musubi, and Bacon egg spam musubi with cheese. The last one was a bit cheaper if you check in on Yelp.
I ate the cheese musubi right away because people on Yelp advised it is better to eat immediately when the cheese is freshly melted. The spam musubi was sooo good! They packed a lot of rice in that cute little thing, but it gave the musubi a rounded shape. The musubi was very savory yet light. It wasn’t oily at all and didn’t even feel heavy or fatty. The bacon was thin.
My favorite was the second one. Even though I didn’t eat it until I got to the top of the hike, the avocado was still fresh, the musubi was still good, even the seaweed didn’t bother me as much! The egg was also good too.
Yay for the hike! It was fun, thrilling and adventurous! And we all made it out alive!
After the hike, the first thing we did was stop by Ono Seafood for some poke lunch! This place was rated as the #1 poke place on the island. It was very small, the line was long, but moves very fast.
I got the combo poke bowl in regular size.
Spicy salmon – creamy mayo sauce, tobiko, ginger, green and white onion, sesame oil.
Hawaiian style tako – sea salt, green and white onion, lime, kakui, chili pepper, sesame oil.
My favorite is the spicy salmon once again! Although I like yesterday’s place a lot more, I realized I favor the creamy spicy sauce for poke more than any other seasoning. The rice was served warm.
The salmon was fresh but wasn’t in big chunks like yesterday’s place. They were in different sizes. There was plenty of roe eggs in the sauce which I appreciate!
The octopus was very fresh and tender, well seasoned.
Then for dessert, I forced myself to stomach ONE malasada from Leonard’s Bakery. Apparently this place has the best Portuguese donuts, which are pastry doughs fried until golden brown.
I chose the dobash “chocolate” filling malasada. I just really like chocolate in general, but oh my god, the dough itself is so light and airy, sweet and doughy, and crunchy and chewy all at the same time. I understand the hype!
Before the booze cruise, Marian really wanted to get mochi donuts from MODO in Mitsuwa Marketplace.
Between us 5 girls, we shared 6 mochi donuts:
Black sesame, earl grey, strawberry, ube, matcha green tea, expresso.
Apparently, Marian says they are meant to be freshly made and served hot. But these weren’t. I thought they were good, but Marian says they weren’t as good because they’re not fresh. Oh well, guess I won’t know for today what I’m missing out on. But on the other hand, the mochi donuts have a more chewy and dense texture that does remind me of mochi.
Then we went on the booze cruise, which was an hour and a half of fun yet relaxing time. I kept staring off into the horizon to avoid getting sea sick, but there is something calming about watching the waves and hearing the waves.
After the booze cruise, we walked 1.2 miles to Rainbow Drive-In.
They’re known for mixed plates so we got: Mix plate (BBQ beef, boneless chicken, mahi), Loco moco plate, and Pork cutlet w/gravy.
All of the plates were very good! Super savory in their own specialties and flavors. My favorite was the pork cutlet with gravy. The chicken was tender and crispy. There was plenty of gravy to go around!
Today is probably the first meal that we’ve had that didn’t follow with dessert because we were all so tired already. Plus there was plenty of dessert today already!
Tomorrow we have the shark tank and kayaking to look forward to!
