Today is our last day in Munich before we had to depart to go back to LA. In a way I am both excited and sad to leave because 1) I am homesick for the comfort of my own bathroom and bedroom but yet 2) I don’t want to go back to work and 3) I have to leave my new fiancé because he lives in SD. Boo!
The weather forecasted that it would rain all day today, but like every other day, I pray that it would be wrong. We did catch a little of rain while walking around Viktualienmarkt, one of the biggest food markets in Munich. There were a lot of shops of all kinds, including food that ranged from fresh to cooked to grill to raw. If it weren’t raining, I can totally imagine this food market being very packed!
Despite the rain, there were a lot of people.
One of everyone’s favorites were the seasoned fresh garlics! At first we kept trying this lighter one that was olive oil and something light. Then we bought these spicier and sour ones. They were yummy!!
We also got this fresh fish sandwich. This was unique and different!! It was freshly raw and had pickles in it to make it sour. The texture and taste was interesting altogether.
Here is a cross section of the sandwich. You can see the distinct layers of the fish and meat slice of pickle.
The rain wouldn’t let down so we managed to get a table for 12 at Ratskeller. This was one of the many shops and restaurants located inside along the perimeter of the Munich cathedral.
I got some coffee with cream and sugar, but sadly, it wasn’t as good as the coffee in Croatia.
Half of us also ordered soup. They came in these cute little soup bowls with lids.
My fiancé ordered the Goulash soup, 100% beef, potatoes, artisan rye bread. It was like a beef stew with small chunks of beef and potatoes. It was on the lighter side. I wish I could have added more salt to it.
And then I ordered the Bavarian potato soup, croutons, bacon, fried onions, artisan rye bread. This was very good! It was like cream of potato soup, like a smooth and soupy version of mashed potatoes. The salt from the croutons, bacon and fried onions was the perfect seasoning to the potato soup. If contrasted well.
A basket of pretzels!
My mom ordered the Cod fillet, deep fried in a crisp batter, tartar sauce, German potato salad. The fillet was perfected fried to a crisp on the outside and perfectly moist on the inside. The potatoes were on the sour side though.
The table got a platter of Grillwurtsl schmankerl. It is great platter of all delicious bratswurts like Nuremberg style bratwurst skinless veal sausage wollwurst, smoked beef beef knackbratwurst, schnapps bratwurst, grilled bacon, gravy, saurkraut, mashed potatoes. This was an overwhelming dish! There were a lot of sausages. My favorite is the light veal ones because they are soft and chewy.
I also ordered the Leg of lamb, braised, served with cilantro-cumin sauce, mangold spinach, bell peppers, chickpeas, basmati rice. This was the only thing that caught my eye even though I didn’t know if Lamb would be a good thing here. It was good!!! The meat fell off the bones; it was moist, flaky and tender. There was good flavor from the sauce; it was like an Indian influence from the cumin and chickpeas and rice.
After a short walk around the shopping center and church, we stopped by the Rischart market to get some hot chocolates to go with a tiramisu slice for my mom.
It was good and hot. This was perfect to hold to keep my hands warm while we walked around in the cold.
Here is my mom’s tiramisu slice. Looks good huh? The only thing was.. it was slightly touched like a cake instead of light and fluffy like a real Italian tiramisu should be.
We made one last trip to Oktoberfest, just us kids. We stopped by a stand and got some nuts to munch on.
We decided to choose these spicy almonds; they were literally dumped out fresh from the fryer.
They were crunchy and spicy!
After finding beer at a beer garden, we ventured our way out. On the way, we tried some mushrooms with white sauce. I don’t know what the white sauce is but the mushrooms are very good!
FRESH potato chips!!! SAY WHAT?!?! Never had them before and it was GOOD. It tasted perfectly and newly fried.
And that roughly concludes my first Europe trip with my new fiancé and my mom and his family. 🙂
