You know, my new husband was craving fried chicken wings and he was reminiscing the old days when he hung out with his friends for 50 cent wings in San Diego. There are many chicken wing places in LA, but I guarantee we would not find good quality 50 cent wings. After consulting with SGV Eats Facebook Group and some research on Yelp, we decided to explore Fusion Wings in Montebello. It is a fairly new place; they opened a couple of months ago in the Spring time during Shelter in Place. Their menu was extensive (15+ wings) and they offered other items such as boba, tea, noodles and some appetizers.
We explored their website & did online ordering for two types of wings and a beef chow fun. We ordered the Spicy Firecracker (Vince really wanted it from a picture that showed an overflow of spicy Szechuan peppercorns) and I wanted to try the original Fusion wings (but X-Hot) because… why not try their original special flavor to start?
We drove 20 minutes to get there and saw that it was a small takeout spot located in a small plaza. We were early and had to wait a little. One of the workers offered to let us sit on some chairs and even turned the AC on for us because it was steaming inside from chicken wings frying. After waiting a little bit & having our own small conversations, one of the workers came over to chit chat with us.. asking us how we heard of this place.. where we’re from.. Very soon we exchanged names and found out that this worker is the owner! His name is Tay.
He is very friendly & hospitable. He said he had this idea for 20+ years now but wasn’t able to set his dream in motion until recently. We told him we were excited to give his wings a try because of the variety of flavor options & the appetizing pictures.
When giving our food, the chicken wings were placed in takeout boxes but with the lids open so that the steam & condensation doesn’t sog the wing skin & textures! I really appreciated that. They also gave us extra blue cheese & ranch dressings to dip.
These firecracker wings are on fire!! First off, very generous with the use of the Szechuan spicy peppercorns. The aroma of the Szechuan was very mildly fragrant when you put your nose to it. The skin was very crispy and prominent, where when you tear into the chicken, the skin comes off with its distinct layer of moistness on the inner side. The chicken meat was moisture, juicy and tender. I would have taken a picture but my fingers were sticky & it was too good to stop. It wasn’t super spicy, but there was the mild numbing taste of Szechuan that was there but still enjoyable.
Next to the spicy firecracker wings are their classic Fusion X-Hot wings, which were just was crispy & flavorful & moist as the firecracker, but had a more mild taste compared to firecracker.
I normally am not the type to order a side of noodles or any other side when I go to a specialty chicken wing place, but because of our recent craving of chow fun noodles, we HAD to order it. Sure, it wasn’t the black bean sauce that we like, but it was still really good. The serving was A LOT because it was packed in there! Beef was tender, noodles were soft…
Vince and I LOVE this place and without trying any other chicken wing place & because of his amazing service & hospitality, we have decided to make Fusion Wings as our go-to chicken wing place! Next month, we are going to come back to support and try all the other flavors.. I have my mind on Jalapeno salt and pepper wings.. Spicy lemon pepper.. Garlic Parmesan..
Drools 🙂
