Today, we spent a full day dedicated to exploring the Dragon Glass Katla ice cave in the Kotlujokull. The first leg is the ride was a regular Mercedes sprinter; then we switched over to a 4×4 Jeep with big wheels to ride through the rugged terrain of the frozen ice fields of Iceland.
They provided helmets and micro spikes before we went on the short hike through the beautiful soft snow and into the cave. The surrounding views of untouched snow was just absolutely breathtaking and a rare sight for me… How often do I get this chance to be completely surrounded by pure white, untouched snow? It’s just so beautiful..
Within the cave, there is a light river stream where water from inside the glacier is escaping out. The sounds are beautiful. They set up brides for us to cross over the water stream. Ripples of frozen ice walls wrap around and over us in a tunnel. No words can describe it’s beauty and non pictures can capture it’s natural essence!
One of the reasons why we got back so late was cause one of the jeeps broke down so one group arrived to the cave a bit later. We had to wait for them. My mom and I barely got back at 830pm. Most restaurants near us close at 9pm and the hotel restaurant is closed because the staff is on strike; so we resorted to the VOX bar in the hotel lobby for small bites. My mom was like.. How come they don’t serve real food in this menu? I said, because it’s technically a bar, not a restaurant.
We also didn’t have time to get food during the day because of the itinerary. We brought mini sandwiches we made at the lounge in a Copenhagen airport!!! (Bread, salami and cheese) to eat in the car rides.
Tomato soup served with gratinated sour dough bread. The soup was classically good. I feel like you can’t mess up on a simple tomato soup. What I did like was the bread it came with!
Its bread had melted cheese on top and lightly toasted. Delicious to dip bread in!
Fish and chips. Cod in beer batter served with French fries and tartar sauce. The French fries were perfect!!!! The fish was perfectly fried but more on the mild side. In the end, I guess it’s healthier for my moms blood pressure if it wasn’t too salted.
I ordered two portions for my mommy and me. Because it was really our only real meal of the day, I wanted to make sure she was fed! Well, she was unhappy I ordered too much food. In the end we took leftovers back to our hotel room.. Hopefully, we eat better tomorrow!
