Our third full day in Iceland we did the Golden Circle tour, which was the original tour we missed on our first day due to the flight cancellations in Copenhagen. Thankfully, the tour was so nice and let us rescheduled it to our last day in Iceland. The sacrifice was that I had to cancel our Northern lights tour and we didn’t have time to explore the city like originally planned.
The tour included visiting the Thingvellir, Geysir hot spring, Gulfoss waterfall and ending our day soaking ourselves in the Blue Lagoon.
In between the stops, our tour guide added an additional stop, which was his friends tomato greenhouse garden.
After getting a tour of inside the greenhouse, how could anyone resist trying a cup of freshly made tomato soup. It was really, really good. Felt heartfelt and comforting and naturally sweet.
We got back from our tour at around 745pm. Enough time to go upstairs, drop off some stuff and head to dinner. We walked 300 meters to an Icelandic family owned restaurant called Askur.
Grilled lamb chops with baked, vegetables and bearnaised sauce. This was my favorite from the two lamb dishes. It had a nice char and pretty juicy and savory. The béarnaise sauce was very good. The vegetables seemed like plain canned or frozen vegetables. I wish the baked potato came with more accompaniments like cheese and chives and bacon bits.
Braised lamb shank with fried vegetables, mashed potatoes and sauce. This seemed so appetizing and very towering, but didn’t taste as good as the lamb shops. There were certain parts that were tender and others that were tough. I didn’t appreciate the lamb sauce it came with, reminded me of au jus? Mashed potatoes were good.
We went back to the salad bar to get watermelon as dessert. I guess I’m content that we had time to grab a real dinner before everything closes. Everything closes early here! Like 9pm!
Now we gotta get ready for our flight back to Copenhagen tomorrow, where we will spend the night for our layover. Fingers crossed things go our way.. I’m already homesick from the weather..
