Our second time to Mexico City and we devoted this trip more for touristy things and to take our parents for their first time! We knew we owed it to come back after our first trip with Brody and Marian two years ago; now that trip was also a short weekend and mostly dedicated to food so we had less time to actually do things.
This morning, we woke up early to go to the CBX Border Crossing to walk across the border to fly out of Tijuana Airport. This was our first time doing it. The CBX was built in 2015 so relatively new. It was such an efficient and fast process with most operated by automatic scanners. Walking across the border and entering the TJ airport took like 10 minutes, including the customs line.
After a 3hr flight on the Aeromexico plane, which was pretty stocked with snacks, alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks and movies, we landed in Mexico City! Took us 45 min to get to our MX Grand Suites. We walked to the El Angel – Monumento A La Independencia.
Did I mention it was also raining? As soon as we reached our hotel, it started to pour and pour. Instead of the street taco stands, we opted for a sit down restaurant to escape the rain.
We walked by a nice one called El Mexicano Restaurant and decided to just sit here to listen to live music. But it was sooooo loud, omg. Instant decision regret. And the food was terrible. The only thing I liked was the refried beans.
HORCHATA. This drink was just mediocre on a one note. Not as good as Puesto in SD or Ixtaco’s in El Monte.
TAMPIQUENA. Thin roast beef accompanied by a red enchilada, guacamole, rice and beans. With Panela cheese. I decided to wing it and order something I didn’t even know what. Another regret. Look at the picture.. the meat is so incredibly and sadly dry. I didn’t eat most of it. Yuck. There was some pork like meat underneath the mole sauce in the left that wasn’t any better either. Also, where was my enchilada??
OAXACAN MOLE WITH PORK. Vince chose this was. Incredibly sweet. They even gave some warm corn tortillas but they weren’t good either.
Okay, on the way back to our hotel, we walked directly by the same churro place we went to our first time around called Churreria El Moro.
The churros are light yet crispy and crunchy. The chocolate sauce was thick and not too sweet. This was a good night cap. Loved that I ended with at least one good dessert thang.
I got myself some hot chocolate Mexicana, which is light and foamy. I remember getting the Spanish last time and it was soooo thick!
Okay, so food wasn’t as good first night but that’s okay! We winged it because of the rain and there weren’t really taco stands out. Plus, with us holding umbrellas, it’d be hard to eat and enjoy. Tomorrow will be a better day!
