I apologize in advance if some of these pictures are too gnarly for some of you.. But I still really want to share it.. This is one of my favorite things to eat since childhood. What we used to do is buy a bunch of eggs, in particular.. duck balut (or also called hot vit lon in vietnamese) from San Gabriel Supermarket, bring them home, and boil them in a big pot of water. Note, at this point when store bought, the baby ducks are already dead.. or so my mom says? I’m not too sure.. While the eggs are boiling, my parents would get a bunch of newspaper, spread them on the floor, and prepare various sauce plates of salt and pepper to eat with the duck balut.
Now this is a Filipino food to eat! I NEVER KNEW THAT. I always thought it was a Vietnamese thing because I grew up eating it.. I guess it can be both! ๐
To eat it.. first make sure that after they’re boiled and cooked. Afterward letting it cool down for a bit, just grab an egg and whichever end is “bigger,” that will be sticking up! This is the end you want to smash at with your spoon because it’s the end where the baby duck head is!! (Not the hard white shell that’ll block you from the delicious protein. ๐
*smash*smash*smash* and *peel*peel*peel* Now you have this:
I even took the liberty of smashing an entire egg and pouring out its content in a bowl so you guys can see everything! ๐ By the way, from everyone I’ve talked to, I think we can all agree that the amniotic sac fluid is our favorite part to eat/drink!
Happy Saturday! May you still have an appetite for breakfast/brunch ๐ <3 <3
